The 1988 Seoul Olympic Games left some great legacies, including Olympic Park, which is a
precious green space where people from the surrounding urban communities can come to
enjoy being in nature.
It has become a well-known landmark, with a variety of attractions, such as Misari
Motorboat Racing Park, which is free to visit for sports and recreation.
- Olympic Park
- Olympic Park was established as a large-scale culture, arts, and sports complex after being used for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Olympic Park is 1.4 million ㎡ in area, and features Olympic commemorative sculptures, the World Peace Gate, and Mongchontoseong Earthen Fortification, together with the associated moat, from the Baekje Kingdom. Still under construction are the Integrated Sports Administration Town and Olympic Sports Complex(open2023) and the National Sports Museum (open 2024).
- Olympic Stadiums
- KSPO has renovated the Olympic Stadiums, turning them into multipurpose activity centers: the KSPO
Dome (the Olympic Gymnastic Stadium), the SK Handball Stadium (the Fencing Stadium), and the Woori
Finance Art Hall (the Weight Lifting Stadium). On average, 6 million people visit these facilities every year,
to enjoy art and entertainment. Especially, KSPO Dome played a vital role as the landmark of “Korean
Wave(Hallyu)”, having PSY, IU, Black Pink – K-pop celebrities for their concerts. The Olympic Swimming
pool is still in use, to train professional athletes.
- Olympic Sculpture Park
- After the end of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Sculpture Park was constructed with the theme of “Global
peace and Collaboration”, to celebrate the Olympic Spirit. Situated within Olympic Park, it is the 5th
largest sculpture park in the world, with over 200 modern sculptures, as well as abstract art, kinetic art,
Nouveau Réalisme and Arte Povera.
- Misari Motorboat Racing Park
- Misari Motorboat Racing Park, created for the rowing and canoeing events in 1986 and 1988, has become
a popular landmark. There is a soccer field and a jokgu (foot-volleyball) court, and a bicycle rental service
is also available, so people can enjoy their time in nature by cycling around Boat Race Lake.
